Busy Life In a Hurry to Grow Up By: Shaleen Teresinski Sociology 1010

Busy Life: In a Hurry to Grow Up Table of Contents The Media’s influence on growing up Peer’s influence on growing up Data-average age children get cell phones, average age girls start wearing make up, average age people become sexually active. They’re not babies anymore…… Conclusion References

Justin Bieber-Justin was discovered at the age of 13. Now he’s a irresponsible adult but young kids still watch his every move and want to be like him. Taylor Swift-The current biggest popstar. Also started young but has made it an effort to be a good influence on kids. Kendall Jenner-TV career started when she was 13. Now she’s a beautiful 19 year old woman and kids are in a hurry to be just like her.

Every year, the first day of school can be nerve wracking for kids. Everyone wants to have the most stylish clothes. Sometimes this makes the kids act older than they really are because they are trying to “fit in”. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/danielle- moodiemills/what-happened-to-little- girls_b_3322130.html)http://www.huffingtonpost.com/danielle- moodiemills/what-happened-to-little- girls_b_3322130.html Kids have cell phone in elementary school now. Of course they want the phone that their friends have or the latest celebrity. This puts a lot of pressure on kids who don’t have cell phones yet.

Things that contribute to growing up faster In 2015 the average age a person got a cell phone was 6 years old (http://www.boston.com/community/moms/articles/2012/07/08/wh en_is_the_right_age_to_give_a_kid_a_cellphone/) The average age a girl starts wearing make up is 12 The average age a person becomes sexually active is 17 (http://www.nbcnews.com/id/37853719/ns/health- sexual_health/t/surprising-sex-statistics/#.VbwrMHnJDIU) InternetThe Media Peers Wearing Make up Becoming sexually active Allowing a cell phone

They’re not babies anymore…… I read a mommy blog and the writer said “Call me old-fashioned, but I miss the days where kids looked and acted like kids and not little adults.” (http://mommynoire.com/15833/15- signs-your-little-girl-is-growing-up-too- fast/#sthash.5ms9URL4.dpuf)http://mommynoire.com/15833/15- signs-your-little-girl-is-growing-up-too- fast/#sthash.5ms9URL4.dpuf This statement is so true. Kids are getting phones, wearing make up, and having intercourse way sooner than they should. They’re more concerned with how people see them instead of how they see themselves.

Conclusion In conclusion, our youth are in such a hurry to be “grown up” that they don’t get to enjoy their childhood. Being a kid is a once in a lifetime opportunity. As parents and role models we need to take a step back and allow our kids to enjoy the things that kids should enjoy. We shouldn’t rush them to have the latest fashions or the latest phone model. We should just take a step back and let them be kids. They will get all that stuff soon enough.
