2
Process of transferring information between computers virtually anywhere in the world.
3
LAN (Local Area Network) : A network of computers within a close distance via physical Ethernet cord or Wireless Connection Example: Room, Building, Campus or a city WAN (Wide Area Network) : connects LAN networks and other network together for further mutual communication Example: The Internet
4
IP (Internet Protocol) Numerical number assigned to each device in a network utilizing the Internet Protocol for communication among devices IP Address is defined as a 32-bit number Host Identification: An address indicates where it is Local Addressing : A route indicates how to get to each component
5
IANA (Internet Assigned Number Authority) Manages and Allocates IP Address Globally IANA works with 5 Regional Internet Registries to allocate IP Address blocks to local Internet Service Providers
7
OSI Open System Interconnection Reference Model An abstract description for layered communications and computer network protocol design
9
Closest to the end user, which means that both the OSI application layer and the user interact directly with the software application Example : Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) and X.400 Electronic Mail.
10
Establishes a context between Application Layer entities, in which the higher-layer entities can use different syntax and semantics, as long as the presentation service understands both and the mapping between them
11
Controls the dialogues (connections) between computers Establishes, manages and terminates the connections between the local and remote application Example: Application Environments that use remote procedure calls
12
Provides transparent transfer of data between end users, providing reliable data transfer services to the upper layers. Example: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP).
13
Provides the functional and procedural means of transferring variable length data sequences from a source to a destination via one or more networks, while maintaining the quality of service requested by the Transport Layer. Example: Internet Protocol (IP)
14
Correct errors that may occur in the Physical Layer This layer was intended for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint media, characteristic of wide area media in the telephone system.
15
defines the electrical and physical specifications for devices. tell one device how to transmit to the medium, and another device how to receive from it
