2 What does this mean? Democracy pg 68 - 69 Democracy – is a governing system in which the people of the country take part Government created by the citizens, and run by the citizens for the good of the citizens

3 Citizens in a Democracy vote and are free to choose their government leaders Democracy works well when the people participate and stay informed on what is going on in their country and the world What does this mean? Democracy pg 68 - 69 People need to participate in a democracy and be a good citizen in order to be aware of what is happening around them

4 Democracy pg 68 - 69 The ancient Greeks in the city of Athens formed the first democracy Their democracy was a direct democracy A direct democracy means that each citizen that cast a vote had a direct role in making every decision

5 Democracy pg 68 - 69 Citizens in today’s democracies do not have direct control over the goings on of the government Instead the citizens vote for a group of people to represent them in government and make the decisions, this is called a representative democracy

6 Democracy pg 68 - 69 In a democracy, decisions are made by the majority, or the most, of a group Majority rule is used to elect leaders and make laws What type of democracy do you think is better? Majority Rule – a system in which the ideas and decisions supported by the most people are followed

8 General rights of a democracy: Democracy pg 68 - 69 RightsMeaning Freedom of Speech Freedom of the Press Freedom of Assembly Freedom of Religion the right to communicate one's opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship the freedom of communication and expression through mediums including various electronic media and published materials is the to come together and collectively express, promote, pursue, and defend their ideas the freedom of an individual or community, in public or private, to manifest religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship, and observance. It also includes the freedom to change one's religion or belief
