7 FIXING THE INTRODUCTION Must include the author’s name and novel title Must restate the question as a statement In the novel, the author uses the father-son relationships of Baba and Amir and Ali and Hassan to create theme. Note that the father and son relationship is a theme Note that the author develops this with two pairs: Baba and Amir and Ali and Hassan. Make the observation that there are similarities and differences between the two pairs

8 Similarities  Both have fathers with no wife  Both have lost their mothers  Both fathers attempt to show affection and pride for their sons  Both fathers demonstrate protection of their son’s well-being / safety Differences  Father of Hassan really isn’t his father!  Where Baba seems to chastise Amir for liking writing and books [ doesn’t approve of who he is ], Ali seems to support Hassan despite his cleft lip  Hassan is a boy and man who stands up for himself and others – Amir struggles with this

9 LOGICAL THINKING TO MAKE A PROVABLE ARGUMENT FOR THE THEME EXISTING- THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO PROVE For each SIMILARITY: 1. Make the claim in HOW they are similar, ONE AT A TIME: affection, pride, love, support, protective of sons 2. Explain the CONTEXT of what’s happening in the story 3. Create a tagline before the quote, telling me who is speaking [ and to whom if appropriate] Ex.: After Amir hides his watch under Hassan’s bed, he then goes to his father to claim that his watch is missing, knowing Hassan will be blamed. When Ali and his son, Hassan, are called before Baba,….. Although Baba forbids Ali to leave after forgiving Hassan, Ali states “ … ……” ( Hosseini ___ ).

10 WHEN DOING COMPARISONS AND DIFFERENCES: Keep the same order each time. If you start with the Baba/Amir pair, always do that claim/quote/analysis first. OR, if you start with Ali/Hassan, always start with Ali/Hassan.
