Track Selection Performance of the CMS Cathode Strip Chamber Track Finder and Level 1 Trigger Kristin Beck Advisors: Dan Holmes, Darin Acosta 14 August, 2008

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 2 Cathode Strip Chambers n One of three muon detection systems in CMS = Compact Muon Solenoid n Located in the endcaps n Responsible for muons in 0.9 ≤ η ≤ 2.5 n CSCs consist of wires and strips arranged in a grid pattern n Muons produce LCTs = Local Charged Tracks n Track Finder uses multiple LCTs to reconstruct a muon’s path

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 3 Cathode Strip Chambers n One of three muon detection systems in CMS = Compact Muon Solenoid n Located in the endcaps Responsible for muons in 0.9 ≤ η ≤ 2.5 n CSCs consist of wires and strips arranged in a grid pattern n Muons produce LCTs = Local Charged Tracks n Track Finder uses multiple LCTs to reconstruct a muon’s path

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 4 Level 1 Trigger n At full luminocity, expect 40MHz from CMS detector n Can only store ~200Hz n Select data to store before saving n Two stages : Level 1 & HLT = High Level Trigger n L1 is custom electronics that reduce data rate to 100kHz n HLT consists of commercial processors the problem CMS’s solution

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 5 CSC Track Finder/Level 1 Trigger n CSC L1 Trigger selects up to 4 muons per bunch crossing (25ns) to pass on to GMT = Global Muon Trigger n Extrapolations by track mode n Input parameters include η, φ, Δη and Δφ n Output to GMT is the quality and P T of track candidates n Highly configurable, FPGA-based trigger

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 6 Identifying Tracks n Muons coming from new physics originate near the IP = Interaction Point n Expect ~ constant η, φ n Select IP-pointing muons by cuts on the maximum value of Δη and Δφ IP LCT

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 7 Identifying Tracks n Beam Halo Muons are produced beam+pipe and beam+gas interactions n Expect non IP-pointing muons n Select by cuts on the minimum value of Δη LCT IP Beam halo muons will be a background signal once we have collisions but they will be important (and interesting) for first beam. (in practice, we only use one of the two depicted shaded areas for selection)

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 8 Track Selection Performance: Δη n Δη Cut Confirmation (…maybe) u Two runs from CRUZET2, one with no restriction on Δη and one with Δη set to 0x5 (Δη < 0.25, or θ < 5°) u What about the tracks with |Δη|>0x5? (<1% of all tracks) 4678846794 Max: 97 Min: -96 Max: 13 Min: -8

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 9 Tracking down that last 1% Are the track mode assignments self consistent? n Complications u Recent firmware update not reflected in software u Undocumented special cases for track mode assignment u Unrecorded “out of time” LCTs … yes (mostly)

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 10 Mode Analysis Output (graphical) # of tracks in mode # of unmasked errors # of tracks in error missing LCTs in event all errors

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 12 Tracking down that last 1% Are the track mode assignments self consistent? n Complications u Recent firmware update not reflected in software u Undocumented special cases for track mode assignment u Unrecorded “out of time” LCTs … yes (mostly) n Are we looking at Δη between the wrong LCTs? n In run 46794, tracks with |Δη|>0x5 are in mode 6 and mode 8 n These modes only contain 2 LCTs … no

Kristin Beck (University of Rochester)Final UM REU Presentation 14/08/2008 14 Conclusions n Basic Δη cut works (to first order) n Further study needed u What are the outstanding issues in the Δη cut? u Is the current error level manageable? u How is track finder performance with mode-specific cuts? u What about cuts on other parameters? n Deliverables u Analysis package that computes Δη and Δφ and checks LCT agreement with assigned track mode Documentation: http://cern.ch/csctf/studies/studies.htmlhttp://cern.ch/csctf/studies/studies.html Technical Presentation: http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=39150http://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=39150
