© Crown Copyright 2013 If you had a chance to change the world for the better, what would you do? 2 Make sure everyone gets enough to eat? Put an end to all wars? Make sure everyone who needs to can see a doctor and get medicine? Stop people from throwing litter? Get people to use their cars less and walk or bike more often?

© Crown Copyright 2013 Millennium Development Goals In the year 2000, world leaders got together and agreed to work towards 8 goals they hoped would put an end to world poverty, hunger and disease. These were called the Millennium Development Goals. World leaders agreed the Millennium Goals would need to be met by 2015 – that’s this year! 3

17
© Crown Copyright 2013 However there is still a LOT to do! Take these for example More than a billion people still live on less than 80 pence a day The richest 80 people in the world have the same amount of wealth as the world’s 3.6 billion poorest people Over 50 million people are having to leave their homes and move country due to wars and poverty, 50% of these are children Lack of clean water still affects over 40% of people
18
© Crown Copyright 2013 Because there is still a lot to do, there are a new set of targets that will last from 2015 to 2030. They are the Sustainable Development Goals It’s not just world leaders that have come up with these. This time many, many more adults, young people and children were consulted from all sorts of backgrounds, all over the world including here in Wales.
19
© Crown Copyright 2013 What do you think? What are the new universal Sustainable Development Goals like? Are they different to the old Millennium Development goals? Did they keep some of the old ones? Why do you think the new goals have been called “ universal“ and “sustainable”?
20
© Crown Copyright 2013 What next? Find out as much as you can about the new Sustainable Development Goals Talk about them to your friends and family Start thinking what action you could take to help make the world a better place
