The Wonder of Discovery: Science and the Language Arts See the Possibilities! Dr. Robbie Ergle

We are born explorers of our world! Science is all about US! As children, we learn using all our senses. We are curious about ourselves and the world around us.

Workshop Goals Understand the WHY of art integration. See some examples of HOW to integrate arts. Gather some beginning RESOURCE points. See the POSSIBILITY of the integration of the arts where you didn’t see it BEFORE. Encourage you to IMPLEMENT new integration strategies in your classrooms. Let’s get started!

Use of the Arts and MI Theory in the Content Areas Higher engagement Better retention Deeper level of understanding of concepts Encourages critical and creative thinking (Armstrong, 2009; Goldberg, 2012; Gardner, 1993 ;

The Scientist, the Writer, and the Artist How are they similar? highly observant have purpose and audience use perspective use illustrations have a fundamental curiosity to understand the wonders of people, nature, relationship (Goldberg, 2012).

NASA (National Aeronautical and Space Administration) www.nasa.gov Great resources for Educators Great resources for Students Write for authentic purposes such as the proposal for ISS experiments. Use science resources as catalyst for LA classes Video clips, NASA TV, You Tube, articles, photos, contests, lesson plans, free supplies for classes

Screen shot of NASA for educators.

Science and Poetry- a way to encourage critical and creative thinking Activity: Collaborative Preposition Poem: Use of photography, science, music, poetry, grammar concept Purpose: review preposition usage and interact with NASA video in an in-depth way. Collaborative and personal writing

Hubble Telescope: Eye of the Universe Video (2.23 min) As you watch video (2x) jot down descriptive words and phrases that come to your mind. Do the photos remind you of anything?

Scan brainstorm list Brainstorm Lists from 2 nd and 3 rd Grades

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between two things. “The Hubble peered INTO the rings of Saturn.” about above across after against along among around at before behind below beneath beside between by down during In Inside into near off on onto on top of outside over past through toward under underneath until up upon with within without

Hubble Preposition Poem (3 rd and 4 th graders) The Hubble hovers high above, Curious, Seeking, Looking, Peering, To undiscovered mysteries and a hand pointing past the moon, Over the Cat-Eye nebula, On the slide of Saturn and touching diamonds, Through meteor showers and weird hail, Under the yellow, red, and blue doomed star, Beyond unreal rocks and Jupiter’s smoking red sea, On unbelievable photographs of alien shaped stars, Past the extraordinary whirlpool of crazy color.

Sketching Activity Sketch object to focus lesson Can use the Inside/Out Method – Begin the sketch from the middle of the object and then work outwards. Easier to notice detail. Easier to be less self-critical of the sketching (Grallert, 1991). Create list of description and details and questions. Can use as the basis for question poems or haiku.

Science, Writing, and Sketching Journals: detailed observations in writing and sketching over an extended period of time. Incorporates descriptive and detailed writing, expository writing, analytical writing, creative writing, sketching and coloring Other Arts Forms: Sculpture, drama, music
