1 Education in Afghanistan Kimmy Tuttle, Sarah Orman, Sophie Tisdale Period 2

2 Education in Afghanistan has experienced many hardships. Up until 2001, Afghanistan was taken over by the Taliban. The Taliban destroyed the education system, setting restrictions on females and disabled people attending school.

3 Only 1 million children attended school until around 2004, where the population in Afghanistan was approximately 26 million. The few children that went to school had to learn in harsh conditions- outside in the heat, no desks, no school supplies, etc.

5 As you can see, less than 1,000,000 children attended school until about 2004. Up until 2002, the majority of the kids in school were male (about 80-90%).

7 When kids don’t go to school... When Children don’t go to school, they often participate in hard labor. These children also have to live in constant fear of starving to death or being affected by the war.

8 Since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, education has drastically improved.

10 Programs like USAID (United States Agency for International Development) and other international donors have worked closely to rebuild Afghanistan’s education sector.
