3 The basic goal of the Hazard Communication standard is to be sure employers, employees and students know about work hazards and how to protect themselves. 6 The written program contains the following: n A list of hazardous chemicals used in the lab. n A description of the system used to ensure that all incoming hazardous chemicals are checked for proper labels and MSDSs. n Description of system for labeling hazardous chemicals. n Description of how hazardous chemical information will be communicated.

7 n Description of how employees/students will be informed of hazards. n Information and training requirements of the hazard communication standards. n Location and specifics of the written program. n List of hazardous chemicals and where used: –specific hazards –proper use and handling

8 n How to read and use labels and MSDSs. n How to detect the presence or release of hazardous chemicals in the lab. MSDS Visual appearance Smell

9 n Measures that can be taken to protect against hazards. n Method used to communicate hazards associated with the chemicals used. n Develop a method to record who has received training.

10 Inventory of Hazardous Chemicals n List includes other substances that may be generated by an operation or process. n An MSDS must be available for each chemical listed.

11 Material Safety Data Sheets n Copies are to be readily accessible in the lab.

12 n An MSDS is available for each substance listed on the inventory. n All MSDSs are reviewed to make sure that they are complete. n Documentation is available to indicate efforts to obtain MSDSs.

14 Container Labeling n All containers must be properly labeled, tagged or marked. –Identify chemical contained –Show hazard warnings appropriate for employee protection. » »Must be legible » »Must be in English » »Must be prominently displayed

15 n The name on the container corresponds with the name on the inventory list and product MSDS. n A review system has been established to ensure that all labels are correct and up to date. n All labels contain an appropriate warning of any physical and/or health hazards. n All labels contain the name and address of the manufacturer and/or responsible party.
