Physical or Chemical Change

Bell Work When air is heated, it expands and rises. Hot-air balloon pilots use this phenomena to their advantage. These pilots use a gas-flame blower to increase the temperature of the air inside the balloon making the balloon rise. This description of hot-air balloon operations includes a physical change example and a chemical change example. Select the choice below that correctly identifies both of these changes. a. The heated air is a chemical change. The burning fuel is a physical change. b. The balloon rising is a chemical change due to overcoming the force of gravity. c. The burning fuel is a chemical change. The heated air is a physical change. d. The wind blowing the balloon is a physical change. The flame is a chemical change.

SPI 0807.9.8 Physical or Chemical Changes
Tennessee SPI Objective: Interpret the results of an investigation to determine whether a physical or chemical change has occurred. Essential Learning Students will examine scenarios and decide if a physical or chemical change has occurred. Essential Question(s) How do I tell the difference between a physical and chemical change? TOC # Pop Rocks/Red Bull Lab

Pop Rock Expander Lab How do I tell the difference between a physical
and chemical change? SPI Pop Rock Expander Lab Materials: Pop Rocks Balloons Funnel Soda bottles Experiment: Put entire package of Pop Rocks into a balloon using the funnel. Place the balloon over the mouth of the bottle of soda. Careful not to drop the pop rocks into the soda before you’re ready. Grab the balloon and dump the Pop Rocks into the soda! Observe what is happening inside the soda as the liquid reacts with the candies. Questions: Which brand of soda releases the most carbon dioxide gas? Does the pop rock flavor change the amount of carbon dioxide in the balloon? Type of Pop Rock Type of Soda Observation

Red Bull and Milk Reaction Lab
Materials: Red Bull Whole milk or Skim milk Experiment: Pour milk in to beaker Pour the red bull on top of the milk Is there a difference in type of milk used? (Discuss with labs 1&2, 3&4, 5&6, 7&8) Questions: What happens when the red bull and milk combine? 2. Is this a physical or chemical reaction? Justify your answer. How do I tell the difference between a physical and chemical change? SPI
