Use your notes from chapters 1-4, his behaviour before, during & after the deer drive in chapter 6, and insights gained from the consultation in Dr Matheson’s surgery in chapter 8.

One way in which Jenkins clearly conveys Duror’s deteriorating mind is through the imagery of trees. One example where his envy of Calum is clearly shown is in his humiliation as he attempts to climb the tree to deliver his message to the brothers. He wishes to torment Calum but on leaving the security of his own domain on the forest floor and entering into Calum’s world he becomes fearful and anxious: ‘His triumph was become a handful of withered leaves …he was like a tree still straight, still showing green leaves; but underground death was creeping along the roots.’ These tree metaphors capture Duror’s predicament effectively: while he maintains the outward appearance of a healthy man, his confidence and strength become eroded from the inside and he is resentful and envious of Calum’s serenity within the trees.
