Main Ideas Egypt was called the Gift of the Nile because the Nile River gave life to the desert. The Nile River helped Egypt develop a civilization. The fertile land around the river provided everything Egyptians needed.

Why was the Nile important to Egyptian Society? The Nile Valley was the seat of an ancient Egyptian civilization that spanned over 4,000 years

In 3,000 B.C.E., Egypt’s geography looked similar to the way it looks today. The country was mostly covered by desert. However, the Nile River was a fertile swathe of land that proved— and still proves—a life source for many Egyptians.

The Nile The Nile is the longest river in the world. It runs for 4,000 miles, beginning in Central Africa, flows North, and eventually empties into the Mediterranean Sea. Why does the Nile flow North? ◦It originates in the mountains and flows downwards ◦Gravity!
