STUDENT REFLECTION I took my book to my classroom and read it to a five year old girl named Destiny. My hopes for my book were that the child I read it to could memorize words from it and read it back to me. I was pleased when I finished reading it to Destiny, she said, “ now it’s my turn to read it”. I gave her the book and she read it pointing to words and saying some of them from memory. The rest of the words she made up by looking at the pictures. Destiny did this many times, starting over every time she finished. Finally, it was clean up time and she had to put it away. Later in the day she actually asked for me to bring it out again for her to read! My book did exactly what I was hoping for. Destiny remembered certain words, and then went from the pictures to tell the rest of the story. I felt really good that she wanted to read it over and over again. I think my story was fun to read, it was short enough for a child to remember words on each page, and the pictures told the story themselves. In my book I used repetition of words like “let’s go”, the word “snow”, and the sentence, “I love to play in the snow”. It also is easy to memorize the sentences, they have a beat to them. The pictures I used in creating my book help tell the story by showing what is being done. It was fun writing my own book, the reaction I received in class was more than I expected. I learned that children can learn a story quickly by repeating, and rhythm. Next time my goal is to use more rhyming words in my story.
