Disagreements exist on how best to reduce inequality between the North & South. Differing views occur between people in Rich countries & people in Poor countries.
3
Views on International Aid a minority view Developed countries such as Ireland provide the equivalent of billions of Euros in aid each year, thus helping to reduce global inequality.
4
Views on International Aid a MAJORITY view 1 st world countries could me more generous. Spend more on aid rather than on pets. Aid should be given with no strings attached. Aid should be sustainable & serve real needs. Military aid should be banned or greatly reduced.
5
Views on International Trade a minority view 3 rd world countries must use trade & not 1 st world handouts, to create wealth for themselves. International trade helps rich & poor countries to prosper together in a ‘global economy’.
6
Views on International Trade a MAJORITY view Trade is important to 3 rd world countries, but it has to be fair. The World Trade Organisation (W.T.O) lays down the law on trade, but these rules serve 1 st world interests and need to be changed. Powerful multinational companies exploit poor 3 rd workers. People in Ireland should support Fairtrade products. It’s a voluntary organisation which buys coffee, tea and other 3 rd world products.
9
Views on International Loans & Debt a minority view 1 st world countries & banks have helped 3 rd world countries with loans for large development projects. Such loans must be repaid with interest.
10
Views on International Loans & Debt a MAJORITY view Debts are crippling 3 rd world countries & should be cancelled. Interest on loans is destroying 3 rd world economies & effecting education & health services. Poor people are suffering & dying as a result. Some African countries pay out 15billion euro in debt repayments each year.
12
Views on Population Control a minority view Birth rates are too high in 3 rd world countries contributing to poverty. It also leads to the over-use of natural resources and damages the natural environment. Third world people should have smaller families.
13
Views on Population Control a MAJORITY view Poor 3 rd world people have no security in old age & feel that many of their children may die young. They have many children to take care of them in old age. With the rich in the north using up most of the earth’s natural resources, it’s greed that must be addressed, not only population.
14
A reduction in inequalities is important for the South because.... Increased prosperity would allow more people to receive good education & healthcare. Southern countries would become less dependent on northern countries regarding aid & debt. The more independent southern countries are the more prosperous they’ll become.
15
A reduction in inequalities is important for the North because.... A more prosperous South could buy more produce from the north, meaning more jobs and prosperity. A more prosperous South could mean a more just, stable and thus safer world. Dangers such as international unrest & terrorism would be greatly reduced.
