USE LIBRARY CATALOGUE TO FIND: Records of books, journal titles, audio-visual materials, etc. Location and shelf number of items in the NMMU libraries Availability of items – can you borrow it or is it out on loan Details of your Library Record ◦ Facility for online renewals, activate reading history, request out on loan items, etc. Books, articles and class notes placed in the Reserve/Short Loan Collection at the request of lecturers

Library Catalogue You can do a keyword search on a topic (Like a Google search) You can also search the catalogue by author, title, journal title, etc. Remember to click on the button

SEARCHING FOR BOOKS ON A TOPIC To do a subject search in the Catalogue, you must know the correct Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH) Keep in mind that the words you are using to describe your topic may not be the same as the LC’s Subject Heading Example: you are looking for the Subject “email”, but you do not find it in the catalogue as the correct LC Subject Heading is “Electronic mail systems” A keyword search may help to find the correct Subject Heading, see next example.

Search Results with items that include the keywords: Zimbawe + education Click on a relevant title You can request “out on loan items” if you have created a PIN in the catalogue

Relevant title: Zimbabwe + education You can click here, to find other books with the same subject content: “Education, Higher - Zimbabwe” These resources can also help you to find journal articles and other materials on a topic Use the Print button and not File-Print on your browser.

When you've found an item in the library catalogue, be sure to note: Call Number Collection (Location) Be sure it is available for checkout (Status)

WHAT IS COURSE RESERVES/MODULES? It is a Short Loan/Study Collection with books and class notes Placed on reserve by lecturers in anticipation of very heavy use You can search the Short Loan/Study Collection by using the following search methods: –Short Loans/Study Collection by Course/Module where you type in the name or code of the course –Short Loans/Study Collection by Lecturer where you type in the surname of the lecturer

WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE ACCESS TO MY LIBRARY RECORD? You can view and renew your library items out on loan Create a PIN to be able to access most NMMU information databases from home Activate your reading history to record all library items borrowed by you Request items out on loan
