Fundraising for Workbooks By: Payal Bhatia
2
Introduction This proposal deals with financial issues that the adult education learners at Henrico County Public School have when they have to buy a new workbooks for classes that they attend. This proposal outlines a pilot fundraising event that can be later modified or expanded according to the community needs. A fundraising event can be organized at Chipotle on the VCU campus where 10% of the proceeds go the organization of choice.
3
Rationale Students at the Adult Education Center pay $35 for each workbook they have to buy. The classroom VCU Globe students work with have to buy 2 books at $35 each. Some students do not have a steady full-/part-time job or have no job at all due to several reasons like household responsibilities or inability to work in their field. While the cost of the workbooks might not seem high to some, some students have shown concern about the cost because they are financially dependent on other members of the household.
4
Resources The adult education learners and the VCU Globe volunteers are the biggest resource we have. Other resources that are needed: printer, art-supplies, water for the volunteers, transportation to bring the adult education learners to the VCU campus, and a staff member from the Adult Education Center who is willing to volunteer and provide useful information to gain a sponsor.
5
Objective The primary objective of this project is to raise money to help the adult learners financially when they purchase books. One of the other things that the students have shown is a concern about is their social life, so, a secondary objective would be to help the adult learners get out of the classroom environment and be active in the community and meet members of the community and converse with them.

Methods 1. Evaluate how many students are willing to participate in this program 2. Find a sponsor. At Chipotle, the requirement is to fill out a form giving the general information about the event and a W-9 form (tax information). http://www.chipotle.com/en-US/talk_to_us/fundraiser_donation/fundraiser_donation.aspx http://www.chipotle.com/en-US/talk_to_us/fundraiser_donation/fundraiser_donation.aspx 3. Once the sponsor accepts our request, set a date for the event. 4. Promotion would be a day before and the day of the event.
7
Evaluation A continuous evaluation would be conducted throughout the program 1. Beginning: how many students are interested; if they are willing to participate in planning, promoting, or coordinating; 2. Planning phase: evaluating their experience in the program so far as well as evaluating the VCU Globe students 3. Promotion Phase: their experience in the community, the kind of people they met, and whether or not being out in the community has been beneficial 4. End: whether they would participate in an event like this again, and how did the event benefit them, either financially or culturally

Budget As a raw example, let’s consider the 15 students that we conduct out pilot study with. 10 of those students are willing to volunteer at the event and 7 out of 10 these students need help financially while purchasing workbooks. - The total cost of the workbooks for 7 students: $245 - Cost of art supplies: $20.00 - Cost of transportation: $7.25/hr for 2 hours = $14.50 - Cost to print 500 fliers: $6.25 ($0.05/page; 4 fliers/page) - Cost to provide water bottles: $6.25 - Online event promotion: Free - Total funds needed to be raised: $292.00

Budget (Cont.) If each person spends about $10 at the Chipotle, then $1.00 does towards the organization. That means to completely cover the cost of the event, we need to get about 300 people to participate in the event. Even if we can get 170 people to go to the event, the cost of the books would be reduced to half after all the additional costs are taken into account. If volunteers are willing to cover the additional costs of art supplies, transportations, fliers, and water bottles, then we would need to get 123 people to participate in the event to cut the cost of books in half.
