www.cirtl.net Breakout Group & Case Study #1: Group Project Blues A student tells you on the first day of class that “he can’t deal with group projects”, that he has had “bad experiences” working with groups. Three weeks into the semester, the same student complains that his 2 group members “aren’t pulling their weight”. When you meet with the two students they agree that the disgruntled student won’t let them participate, often redoing their work without discussing it prior to turning it in. What do you think is going on in this group? Rewind the case study: What can you do, as the instructor, to minimize this from occurring with your cooperative group assignments?

www.cirtl.net Breakout Group & Case Study #2 : Talk, Talk, Write, Write Student groups of five are assigned to formulate a response to a case study you presented in class. You give students 20 minutes to develop their responses. Each group must turn in a written response in class and one member must give a 5-min presentation of their response. A student in one of the groups comes up to you during the work period and tells you, “I’m not going to give our presentation or write up the response, it seems like I always get stuck doing this in groups.” What do you think is going on in this group? Rewind the case study: What can you do, as the instructor, to minimize this from occurring with your cooperative group assignments?

www.cirtl.net Breakout Group & Case Study #3: Fed Up With Freeloading During a month long study abroad course, your class has to complete four group research projects. Students are mixed up so that they have to work with different people on each of the projects. After you assign the fourth project, three students come to speak with you. “We are here as representatives of the class, no one wants to work with Judy any more, she never does anything on the projects.” You have one more week of the course. What do you think is going on in the class? Rewind the case study: What can you do, as the instructor, to minimize this from occurring with your cooperative group assignments?

www.cirtl.net Lessons Learned? What will you do to develop and facilitate cooperative group work, that works?! (Don’t forget about assessment.)
