Uniformal barcode processing for patient safety and efficiency Brief Proposal Esther Peelen, GS1 en Erik Zwarter, ErasmusMC 19 October 2015

© GS1 Nederland 2015 Context 2 FDA UDI regulation for medical devices 2013 Europe will follow with EU UDI regulation in 2017? The Netherlands In cooperation with the Dutch Ministry of Health two working groups are striving for uniform barcoding for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Associations for Hospitals and suppliers are involved as well as experts that have implemented barcode scanning in their hospital or manufacturing site Common goal: patient safety and efficiency
3
© GS1 Nederland 2015 Scope 3 3 globally adopted standards for identification and barcoding: ICCBBA HIBCC GS1 Medical products of human origin like blood, tissues, organs etc Pharmaceuticals Medical Devices ProductId with Batchnumber, Expiration date, Serial number GS1: PatientId, CaregiverId, LocationId, DocumenttypeId
4
© GS1 Nederland 2015 The problem 4 Hospital IT-systems are not sufficiently equipped to process standardised barcodes and their information Most Hospital IT-systems cannot exchange standardised information from barcodes (productId, expiration date, batchnr) Leading to: Lack of Interoperability between Hospital IT systems and national Healthcare registration databases (Implant register etc) Impossibility of Traceability of healthcare products inside the hospital leading to work around processes and manual registration of these products in patient files Patient safety is at risk High costs caused by inefficient processes
5
© GS1 Nederland 2015 Example: 5 ProductId (01): The System only allows 12 positions, when 14 are needed. No correct registration possible.
