ACADEMICS “As students advance through the grades, they are expected to meet each year’s grade-specific standards and retain or further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades.” CCSS

CHANGES Third grade is a transition year for your children. They are faced with a more challenging curriculum than in second grade. As we often remind them, they are the “big kids on the block”. In alignment with the National Core Standards, they will be expected to perform in the following ways by the end of this year.

- Read independently - Read a higher volume of pages - Read for content ( Religion, Social Studies, Science) - Recognize and use vocabulary in Religion, Mathematics, Reading, Science and Social Studies -Solve Mathematics multi-step Word Problems - Complete computation problems accurately and in a timely manner

ELA Reading – literature and informational texts across the curriculum Writing - Creative Writing Activities - Writing complete sentence answers in all subject areas Language – assigned Spelling and transition from inventive spelling - Grammar – Correct usage - Mechanics - Vocabulary Speaking and Listening

Mathematics Transfer problems from hard text to copybook Addition and Subtraction basic facts should already have been mastered Multiplication Facts need to be practiced every night Understand relationship between multiplication and division (ex. 4X8=40 40/8=5) Understanding of unit fractions Standard Measurements and geometry

MORNING MEETING Begins school day with a positive tone Increases excitement about learning Improves academic and social skills Gives students the chance to feel a sense of significance and belonging Gives the class a chance to have fun together

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATED INTO OTHER SUBJECT AREAS

HOMEWORK Parent supervision is needed at this level. Helping your child correct mistakes in grammar, spelling, and math is permissible. Please check homework assignments and sign copybook. study all subjects and practice math facts Projects supervised by parent but done by student

TESTS Written responses will be done routinely. Using part of a question in the answer is expected. Words in Word Banks should be spelled correctly!

ATTENDANCE Attendance and being attentive in class is important at this level of learning. Makeup work will be given when child returns from a vacation.

DISCIPLINE MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE INCENTIVES Children must understand and accept responsibility for their actions
