2
2 Main points l Why we did? l What we did? l How we did? l What we learnt? l Next step
3
3 Outline l CERNET Introduction l Severe SARS situation during April –June, 2003 l CERNET video conference services during SARS l Experiences and observations l Future plan
4
4 CERNET Introduction
5
5 General Statistics l 20,000km DWDM transport network l 2.5 Gbps and multiple 155 Mbps links to 38 Pops covering all the provincial capitals l 300 Mbps to Global Internet l 100 Mbps to Advanced Networks (APAN 、 STARTAP 、 JANET) l 1,200+ universities connected located in 200+ cities l 12M end users l 320M Students in China
6
6 CERNET Topology
7
7 CERNET Multicast Backbone l Native Multicast Service across 36 Pops all over country l PIM-SM/MBGP/MSDP and 10 Anycast RPs l Multicast routing ACL control l National peer –NSFCNET l International peers –APAN –STARTAP –JANET

9 CERNET Multicast Monitoring l Two-layer monitoring system –Backbone –Provincial nodes l Real time and history statistics –CERNET multicast beacon –Multicast traffic monitoring –MBGP monitoring –MSDP monitoring
10
10 Severe SARS situation during April –June, 2003 in Beijing and China
11
11 Severe Situation l Beijing, from April 21-April 30 –Newly diagnosed SARS patients: 150+/per day –New suspects: 200+/per day l The whole country –Reached 26 provinces l Travels, visits or face to face communications were not encouraged – International, national units; universities; student dormitories; or even canteens –Students dated behind iron rail fences l All public activities were canceled –Public meetings, classes in primary and high schools l Disinfections were required everyday (during peak epidemic time ) –working half time –Disinfect 3 times/day l transportation tools, offices, shops, homes, students dormitories, classrooms, even books l Everyday excises were encouraged
12
12
13
13 Influences l People were more cautious and were voluntary to cooperate with government l People spent more time at homes and depended more on Internet l More important tasks were needed to keep CERNET daily operation l CERNET Videoconference Service System was started
14
14 CERNET Videoconference Services
15
15 CERNET Videoconference Service Framework video/audio encoder/decoder data sharing Network Access Provider Videoconference Service Provider Users Videoconference monitoring V ideoconference security Video conference management Bandwidth management, multicast service,QoS,
16
16 CERNET Video Conference Systems l Multicast –AccessGrid –Windows Platform l Unicast –H.323 –PolyCom Platform
17
17 Multicast VC System CERNET multicast Service AG term unicast AG term AG Term Reflector multicast AG Term
18
18 Multicast VC Service (1) l Scale –20+ Multicast based AG compatible clients –100+ unicast clients using multiple reflectors l Activities –University presidents reported SARS situations to MOE –Researchers reported SARS research progress to MOST –University presidents working meeting –CERNET NOC day to day routine meetings –Academic exchanges
19
19 Multicast VC Service (2) l Lessons –Large scale multicast video conference is a very useful tool especially during SARS –Running large scale multicast video conference system is a great challenge. –Trained human resource is key to success. –Training in the day to day operation is a very effective method. –Full dresses rehearsals before the formal meeting is necessary
20
20
21
21 Everyday NOC meeting Reporting to MOST Univ. presidents reporting to MOE
22
22 H.323 VC System l System –Polycom20 sites –MCU1 at CENET center l Mainly for international exchange and cooperation activities –Global Presidents working meeting (APRU2003) –Senior government staff training hosted by the World bank, Beijing office –Overseas applicants reviewed by NSFC –International conferences, International seminars –Internet2 Spring member meeting
23
23 APRU 2003 Spring Internet2 Member meeting
24
24 Future Plan l CERNET2 –Native IPv6 backbone l 20 cities (2.5Gbps - 10 Gbps) l 200 universities l Next Generation Video Conference System to address –Scalability –Security –Mobility –QoS
