10 READ LIKE A DETECTIVE AND WRITE LIKE AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER! BUILD STUDENTS ’ CAPACITY TO READ, THINK, TALK, AND WRITE ABOUT COMPLEX TEXTS Reading Reinforcing reading fluency (read like they speak) Encourage close text analysis Making inferences Summarizing Synthesizing information from multiple sources Transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" More challenging material Balance of informational text & literary text Writing Build and write informational paragraphs Write summaries of larger portions of text Experiment with writing their own poetry inspired by their reading Increased use of text based evidence Routine writing over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) “on demand” writing in shorter time frames for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.

11 STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT POETRY AND POETS THROUGH CLOSE READING, DISCUSSION AND WRITING Students determine the characteristics of poetry and consider what inspires writers and poets Students closely read and analyze the same poems that the main character “Jack” reads Students track what “Jack” is learning about poetry alongside their own learning though close readings. Students also experiment with writing their own poetry inspired by their reading. Discuss the main character’s attitude toward poetry and how it changes throughout the book Students engage in deeper analysis of Jack’s character and his inspiration through extended discussion prompts. Students learn to write informational paragraphs in order to summarize larger portions of the text. Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. It is written in diary format, from the perspective of a young boy who resists poetry assignments from his teacher.

12 WE WANT AND NEED WORD NERDS Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. Correctly use frequently confused words e.g., to, too, two; there, their, they’re Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word e.g., telegraph, photograph, autograph
