STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT POETRY AND POETS THROUGH CLOSE READING, DISCUSSION AND WRITING Students determine the characteristics of poetry and consider what inspires writers and poets Students closely read and analyze the same poems that the main character “Jack” reads Students track what “Jack” is learning about poetry alongside their own learning though close readings. Students also experiment with writing their own poetry inspired by their reading. Discuss the main character’s attitude toward poetry and how it changes throughout the book Students engage in deeper analysis of Jack’s character and his inspiration through extended discussion prompts. Students learn to write informational paragraphs in order to summarize larger portions of the text. Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. It is written in diary format, from the perspective of a young boy who resists poetry assignments from his teacher.

Correctly use frequently confused words e.g., to, too, two; there, their, they’re Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Use common, grade-appropriate Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word e.g., telegraph, photograph, autograph
