Physical and Chemical Changes Reassessment Review

What To Expect This activity will consist of three parts. 1. Notes 2. Practice 3. Writing Directions for each will be at the beginning of the section.

Notes Directions  Click “Slideshow” then “From Beginning” to view this presentation properly.  Take notes on ALL the informational pages by doing the following – 1. Use the page titles as subheadings. 2. Read the entire page carefully 3. Go back and read it again visualizing the information 4. Re state the information in your own words on a separate paper.  Go back and study the information

Objective: Chemical/Physical Changes  The learner will be able to distinguish between a physical and chemical change.  And know a chemical change has occurred by using evidence such as production of gas, change in temperature, formation of a precipitate, or unexpected color change.

Matter  Matter is everywhere.  Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.  Matter is constantly experiencing both chemical and physical changes.

Physical Change  Physical changes occur when matter changes its physical property but not its chemical make up.  Physical property changes could include a change in: texture, shape, size, color, odor, volume, mass, weight, and density.

Physical Change

Chemical Change  Chemical changes are changes matter undergoes when it becomes new or different matter.  To identify a chemical change look for signs such as unexpected color change, bubbling and fizzing, light production, smoke, formation of a precipitate, and presence of heat.

Chemical Change  A chemical change occurs when fireworks are used. Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. These change chemically as they light up the sky.

Practice Directions  Make a 3 column chart  Title the first column “change”  Title the second column “PC or CC”  As you go through the practice slides write the change it is giving you in the first column.  THINK carefully about the change then write whether it is a PC or CC on the second column.  In the third column write the evidence of how you knew.
