1 SWERN Summary of Discussion Document

2 Opportunity SWERN has a large amount of back content and the facility to create new content SWERN has a metropolitan area network (MAN) inter- connecting 6 universities & numerous HEI’s and colleges The SWERN MAN is connected to JANET Inuk has a video ingestion, management and distribution platform that is already providing video services. Inuk could provide SWERN with a means to distribute their content either on demand or as a linear channel to all their student/community via the SWERN MAN

3 Basic Requirements The ability to ingest, tag and manage existing or newly produced content via a content management system Provide students/users access to content as Video-On- Demand. Provide student/users access to selected content as a dedicated SWERN channel Manage linear broadcast channels with a combination of scheduled VOD and live feeds Offer a range of play out options that should include: –Linear broadcast channel to PC’s and TVs (via STBs) –On demand to PCs and TVs (via STBs) –Offline to PCs, iPods, handhelds and mobile phones

4 Solution Content

5 Way Forward Provide comprehensive content ingestion and management services Provision of a Freewire distribution platform with Edge servers to optimise bandwidth usage and deliver VOD content Allow distribution of content to numerous play out devices

6 Questions & Thoughts Is this a closed or open solution? In other words does SWERN want to provide other channels from other providers? e.g. BBC or other universities! Does SWERN want to make this content available to none SWERN students? Does SWERN want to generate revenues? i.e. pay per view content or advertising? If revenue generation is to be considered, will it only apply to the non-SWERN community?

7 Timescales Discussion on the 18th of July Review at follow-up meeting as soon after the above meeting as possible Establish service delivery timelines; i.e. what’s required where and by when?

8 Next Steps Discuss feedback with SWERN in more detail Establish tighter requirements or service specifications, i.e which types of services to which sites Prepare final proposal to accommodate all requirements and cost as appropriate Develop and agree a roll-out or deployment schedule, and where relevant roadmap for feature releases
