Protestant Reformation This was a time period when many Catholic clergymen and political leaders joined together to protest the Catholic Church, eventually breaking away from it

Many protests and reforms were sparked by the philosophies of the Renaissance Individualism – with the focus on individual ability, people started to question the need for a priest and/or pope to communicate to God Secularism – With the focus on non-religious explanations and leaders, people began to question the role of the Church; Humanism –ancient scholarship promotes questioning How could each philosophy spark reform within the Catholic Church?

Protestant Reformation Prior to the Reformation all Christians were Roman Catholic The [REFORM]ation was an attempt to CHANGE the Catholic Church People like Martin Luther wanted to get rid of the corruption and restore the people’s faith in the church

Martin Luther Monk – studies Catholic religion He became troubled over the possibility of not going to heaven He turned to the Bible, and confession for comfort In the Bible he found the answer he was looking for

Romans 1:17 “The righteous shall by his faith.” Luther realized that only faith (in the ultimate goodness of Jesus), not good deeds, could save a person. No good works, rituals, etc. would save a person if they did not believe.

Martin Luther - beliefs Salvation by faith alone, not by good works Clergy could marry Source of Authority was the Bible (should be translated into different Languages so uneducated could participate.) Rituals: Held in former church, they sang hymns, everyone given bread and wine Two Sacraments: Baptism and Communion Strong family ties.

John Calvin Predestination Bible must be followed. Strong tie between religion and government. If you sin you should be held accountable by church and state. Theocracy - No singing, dancing, gambling, drinking etc. You house could be searched for these items. Worshipped in church 5 times a week, long sermons, answered questions by minister.

Anglicanism Henry VIII wanted divorce, his wife could not produce heir. The church refused to grant him a divorce. He split from them. Salvation by faith alone, not good works Source of Authority: King of England and Bible Same as Catholicism but service in vernacular and church plain. As long as obedient to queen and king could do what they wanted.

Anabaptist Rebels that wanted reform Sin is everywhere, to be saved you must be secluded and avoid the world Source of power: Bible - strict interpretation Meet in home, no religious icons, Baptism only for adults No government rules.
