1 The Story of the First Thanksgiving

2 The first Thanksgiving was a celebration between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoags. Even though the Pilgrims and the Wampanoags were very different from each other they learned how to be good friends.

3 The Wampanoags are Native Americans who live in Massachusetts
The Wampanoags are Native Americans who live in Massachusetts. A long time ago, the Wampanoags lived in round houses called wigwams. They were farmers, fishermen, and hunters. Everyone in the Wampanoag Village worked very hard – even the kids!

4 The Pilgrims came all the way from England to America, where the Wampanoag lived. They rode across the ocean on big ships. This ship is called the Mayflower. It was a hard trip and it made the Pilgrims very sick.

5 When the Pilgrims landed in America, they were very scared
When the Pilgrims landed in America, they were very scared. They didn’t have anywhere to live and they didn’t have much food to eat. The Wampanoags were scared of the Pilgrims because they were strangers.

6 The Pilgrims thought that the Wampanoags were scary because they wore headbands with feathers in them and clothes made of deerskin.

7 The Wampanoags thought that the Pilgrims were scary because they wore tall black hats and heavy boots.

8 The Pilgrims and the Wampanoags were very brave, though, and they learned to become good friends. A Wampanoag man named Squanto helped the Pilgrims grow corn and hunt for deer so the Pilgrims had plenty of food to eat.

9 The Pilgrims were very thankful for the Wampanoags and all of their help. They had a big feast to celebrate their new life in America and they invited the Wampanoags to celebrate with them.

10 The Wampanoags and the Pilgrims celebrated for a whole week
The Wampanoags and the Pilgrims celebrated for a whole week! They ate fish and deer, corn and squash, cranberries and cabbage.

11 Everyone enjoyed the feast with their new friends.
The Pilgrims taught the Wampanoags their favorite songs, dances and games. And the Wampanoags taught the Pilgrims their own dances, songs, and games. Everyone enjoyed the feast with their new friends.

12 They were very thankful for good friends who helped each other when they needed it. That’s why we call it the First Thanksgiving.

13 We celebrate Thanksgiving every November with our own feast and celebration. It’s a day to spend with our families and friends. We usually eat turkey, mashed potatoes, and corn. It is a time to be thankful for all the things that we love.
