1 Pick up Textbooks and handout Entry Task: In the past two class sessions we have talked about Heroes. Expanding on your definition of hero; what is an EPIC HERO? (write down your thoughts on a piece of notebook paper) Place Glass Castle journals on corner of desk to be checked.

2 Learning Targets for today Students will be exposed to other cultures and time periods, quality literature and effective/varied writing styles Students will begin to understand key facts that influenced and developed literature Students will write effectively in expository mode to examine/analysis a complex idea

3 The Glass Castle On a piece of notebook paper answer the following questions. 1. When driving through the desert, what do Rex and Rose Mary fight about? 2. What promise does Jeanette make to Maureen when Maureen is born? 3. In Battle Mountain, where do the kids sleep? How do they feel about it? 4. What does Jeanette collect in Battle Mountain? 5. Describe what life is like in Battle Mountain when Rex is working. Explain how Rex changes after he loses his job. (2 pts). BONUS: When Jeanette complains that she is hungry, what unspoken family rule is she breaking?

They spend time as a family at home, reading, etc. They go out as a family on Sunday nights. 2. Rex is gone all the time. He drinks more. He steals food. BONUS: When Jeanette complains that she is hungry, what unspoken family rule is she breaking? They were supposed to pretend that their life was always a long, incredibly fun adventure.
