1 THE POWER OF SPEECH Talk like an influencer

2 I believe we can grow from speaking and listening consciously. Communication is key in achieving great things. In the workplace, being a strong communicator is what will make it possible to get things done and to get your ideas across. CONTEXT Here are a few tips on how to build on your speech skills and develop your ability to influence.

3 Most people build their speeches in this order: WHAT  HOW  WHY. The WHY has almost no impact in this form of speech and is often forgotten completely. A powerful speech will be constructed the other way around: WHY  HOW  WHAT WHY ∙ Start with a hook, something that grabs the audience’s attention HOW ∙ Keep a positive attitude all throughout the speech, you must be perceived as a solution bringer WHAT ∙ End the speech by giving something to do the audience. That is your “What”. 1 ∙ SPEECH STRUCTURE WHAT ∙ What we do, HOW ∙ How we do it, what’s special about it WHY ∙ Why we do it, the purpose

4 Here is an example of both structures Regular Regular: (WHAT) Here at Arkadin, we sell conferencing solutions, (HOW) we have great customer service and custom solutions that fit all needs and budgets. (WHY) Our mission is to connect the world and bring people together. Do you want to do business with us? Powerful Powerful: (WHY) Here at Arkadin, we believe in bringing people together and connecting the world regardless of where they are. (HOW) We achieve it through our world class customer service and by adapting to your needs and budget. (WHAT) We sell conferencing solutions. Let’s set a meeting. Selling people on the purpose is more powerful as you sell them through their feelings, “the Why” and you let people rationalize it with the “What”. 1 ∙ SPEECH STRUCTURE

5 2 ∙ THE DOs AND DON’Ts DOsDON’Ts Honesty – Being straight and clear Gossip – Speak behind someone’s back Authenticity – Be yourself Judging – Making a judgment towards your interlocutor Integrity – Doing what you say you’ll do Negativity – Adding a negative spin to the conversation Caring – Wishing well to others Complaining – About little and big things Giving excuses – Projecting the blame on something/someone else Exaggeration – Can lead to plain out lying Bigotry – Not considering the opinions of others

6 3 ∙ OTHER SPEECH TIPS Speak in a lower register, people associate depth with power. Speak from the chest. This is also associated with posture. A straight posture will influence your tone of voice. Avoid monotonic voice. A melodic voice does not mean singing you sentence, but fluctuation to avoid communicating boredom. Have a natural pace. Where people may think accelerating the pace can create a sense of urgency, a slow pace will do a much better job in emphasizing on an important subject matter. Silence is much better and much more powerful than when filled with “eeee”, “mmmm”, “you know” or other reflexes we may have to fill those silences.
