3  The mission of the FBI is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the United States, and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal, and international agencies and partners. It performs these responsibilities in a way that is responsive to the needs of the public and faithful to the Constitution of the United States.

9  1908 – Bureau of Investigation is born  1935 – Now FBI under the Department of Justice  Directed by J. Edgar Hoover until 1972  Protected against espionage in WW2 and the Cold War  Investigated the shooting of JFK

10  1984 – Formed elite units (SWAT) to secure Los Angeles Olympics  1984 – Computer Analysis and Response Team formed  Late 80s – FBI lab helped develop DNA testing  1993 – Started increasing counter- terrorism role after World Trade Center Bombing

11  9/11 Commissions report stated FBI did not pursue intel reports that could have reduced 9/11 impact  Major organizational changes  Increased Budget

12  During times of peace the FBIs role does change much – terrorism and crime do not sleep  Defense from internal threats a priority

13  After natural disasters the FBI alerts the public of charitable donation fraud  FBI Disaster Squad Has identified over 15,000 victims Investigated over 225 disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the south Asia Tsunami
