Money You will learn Why money is called money First coins and first notes
2
Where did it get its name? Money comes from the Latin word ‘moneta’ In 390BC the Gauls tried to invade Rome but geese warned the Romans by sqawking. The geese lived in a sanctuary dedicated to the Godess Juno. Juno was given the nickname Moneta (meaning adviser)

In 289 BC the first Roman mint was built by, or in Juno’s temple. To show where the coins were made the mint put a picture of Juno’s head on each one. ‘Juno Monetas’ became money over time. FIRST COINS The first real coins were probably minted some time between 650 and 630 BC in Lydia (modern day Turkey)

First notes Between 3000 BC and 2000 BC Mesopotamians invented the idea od using valuable items as ‘money’. Grain was valuable to them and they put it all in stores run by the Palace and the Temple for safe-keeping – in return for their deposit they were given a receipt. Over time they used the paper receipt to ‘buy’ from each other, rather than carry around heavy grain.
5
UK paper money This developed in the same way but by the goldsmiths giving people receipts for their gold coins when they deposited them to keep safely Our notes still have the words ‘I promise to pay the bearer on demand the sum of ….’
