4 The Hunger Games - Chapter Summaries
In the Capitol, a team of people wax Katniss’s body hair to prepare her for her stylist, Cinna who much to Katniss surprise, turns out to be is quiet and modest and requested the tributes of the impover- ished District 12 for his first year as a stylist for the Hunger Games. Cinna says since District 12’s industry is coal mining, Katniss’s and Peeta’s costumes will reflect coal’s main function, which is to burn. Her costume will be lit with a synthetic flame, and Cinna calls her “the girl who was on fire.” In their unusual matching costumes and Peeta are escorted to a main plaza in the city, where they will go before the huge audience. Just before Katniss and Peeta emerge, Cinna lights them and tells them to hold hands. They emerge and are instantly a sensation. The crowd loves them, and because of Cinna’s work, they are the most memorable tributes of the night.

Character Development - Key Points Katniss – We see a new, feminine side of Katniss in this chapter. Scrubbed up clean and in Cinna’s costume her true beauty is revealed...and she almost seems to be enjoying the crowds adulation, perhaps Katniss does have an ego after all? Cinna – The least pretentious character Katniss has yet met in the Capitol. He seems genuinely interested in her as a person and not just a tribute. Peeta – Turns from a potential threat into a dependable ally, ‘solid as a rock’ or is he? Plot Development – Key Points Katniss learns to trust Cinna, despite her doubts and reservations at first. Katniss begins to ‘play to the crowd’ and winning them over, begins to think she does stand a chance of being victorious and should not be ‘counted out of the games.’ Key moments in the Chapter. The sensational costumes Cinna has devised make Katniss and Peeta a popular and memorable hit with the crowd, helping their chances of survival. Katniss fond reaction to Peeta when the get off the chariot, which she immediately becomes suspicious of.
