Transitions Letting the Reader Know the Reasoning Behind Your Organization

Review A 5 paragraph essay happens not when there are five paragraphs. It’s an essay (of any number of paragraphs) where the organization of points and/or discussion of sources has not been given any consideration. A 5PE happens when you could technically reshuffle your paragraphs and it wouldn’t change the essay at all (which is bad).

Transitions Transitions are sentences that signal to the reader the organization and connections in your essay. In a 5PE they are this: Firstly, Secondly, Finally, Another reason I feel... In conclusion … don’t do this.

Lack of Transitions is Jarring David Hambling in his book Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse discusses the best weapons to arm yourself with as you prepare for a life of never-ending battle. Hambling also discusses the importance of having calm and collected partners who will not make the situation worse. Hambling’s points are well taken, for many people might mistakenly think that any weapon will do as well as any other one. After reading Hambling’s comparison of weapon features, I’m convinced that giving some extended consideration to your personal weapon load out is a crucial first step in ensuring your long term survival. In an article titled “Know Your Undead Enemy,” Susan Miller provides an in-depth analysis of zombie biology in order to best confront their known weaknesses. Zombie flesh is “thinner from decomposition compared to the living” and zombie bones “are incredibly brittle without the accompaniment of living muscle mass” (55). But wait?! Why have we moved onto Miller?

Transitions Quickly Guide the Reader David Hambling in his book Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse discusses the best weapons to arm yourself with as you prepare for a life of never-ending battle. Once the optimal weapon has been selected, the tool alone is not enough if you don’t know how best to place your shots. Transition (in bold) immediately shows the reader the connection between these two sources.

Transitions The most effective use of transitions combines them with your topic sentences. Therefore a good transition should do 3 things. Briefly summarize the paragraph(s) that came before (or the main idea from before) Preview the new idea coming up. Show the purposeful connection between the two ideas. This is the most important part. Guide the reader as to why you’re proceeding in this order.

Transition: Since marijuana has been scientifically proven to cause very few physical or mental, long-term problems for the human body, this evidence sets the foundation for its medical benefits for the terminally infirmed.

The money saved in an already heavily burdened health care system is not the only type of pressure that will be relieved if euthanasia is made legal. More important than the stress felt by often nameless healthcare providers is the personal stress and anxiety felt by the families of loved ones who face painful and incurable conditions.

<Previous paragraph about how sugary sodas at school affect physical health Although excess sugar has hazardous effects on student bodies (and have contributed to the obesity epidemic), sugar does not stop at flesh and bone. Far more sinister is sugar’s effect on a child’s brain in relation to the fundamental purpose for school– learning. <Paragraph proceeds to explain how sugar affects attention span and other learning tools

Transitions Tend to come at the beginning of the new paragraph (though some people prefer to put them at the end of paragraphs) Also operate within paragraphs in a more simplified form (the transitions we’ve been discussing happen between shifts in major ideas) Further, From this, In other words, Building upon this idea, On the contrary,
