2 www.aurp.ca History of Research Parks Founded in 1951, the Stanford University Research Park was the first research park of its kind in the world. Other major research park developments followed over the next three decades, most notably the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina in 1959 and Innovation Place in Saskatchewan in 1980. Today, North American research parks occupy 47,000 acres and include 124 million square feet of space. More than 300,000 knowledge workers are employed in a research park with every research park job creating an estimated additional 2.57 jobs in the economy. Discover. Accelerate. Collaborate.

31 www.aurp.ca The Velocity Residence is a dorm for University of Waterloo students who wish to learn more about building a startup or work on their current companies.Velocity Residence Velocity Alpha is a series of workshops, panels and sessions that runs each term to help educate the public about building a successful business. Velocity Alpha Velocity Science is a partnership with the Faculty of Science to provide a discovery lab, mentoring and coaching for any student with a startup in materials or life sciences. Velocity Science The Velocity Fund provides seed funding and pitch experience to companies through the Velocity Fund Finals, held three times a year.Velocity Fund The Velocity Garage is 7,000-square-foot facility with free workspace and a peer community for more than 30 software startups.Velocity Garage The Velocity Foundry has 11,000 feet of free workspace and a peer community for more than 30 hardware startups.Velocity Foundry Companies that are currently in have launched from Waterloo’s Velocity startup program have raised more than $250 million from investors.
