G6 Monday, December 9, 2013 Ratios Word Problems Daniel and Paul went hunting. On the first day, Daniel caught 3 tigers and Paul caught 8 deer. On the second day, Daniel caught 4 tigers and Paul caught 7 deer. On which day of hunting did Daniel and Paul catch a higher ratio of tigers to deer? 1. Explore - Day 1: 3 tigers/8 deer -- Day 2: 4 tigers/7 deer -- Which day had the higher ratio of tigers to deer? 2. Plan - To compare both days, we need to convert them to the same units of measurement. I will change the fractions into percents. 3. Solve - 3/8 =.375 = 37.5% -- 4/7 =.5714 = 57.14%. Day 2 had the higher percentage which means it had the higher ratio. 4. Examine - 3/8 is less than half while 4/7 is more than half so the answer is reasonable.
