What is priority setting? Aim is to improve the allocation of (personal) resources to meet set goals and achieve personal fulfillment

Why set priorities..1? Multiple demands for attention –Family –Health –Friends –Work –Leisure –(?Social) responsibility –“Eye on the future” Not living only for the present

Why set priorities..2? Resources are always in short supply –Time –Opportunities –Funds

How to assess priorities..1 Natural responsibility –Family: nuclear, extended Time dependence –Can this wait? Personal vs. other’s control –Does it depend on other’s activities Does it serve long-term goals or aspirations

How to assess priorities..2 Is it “vain” or substantial? “Rule of rescue” – equivalent to giving first preference to the most severe health conditions (esp. emergency care for life-threatening illnesses) What is the opportunity cost?

Contextual considerations Stability of job Social responsibilities –Family –Community –Etc. Future security Personal strengths and weaknesses –Being realistic!

Every choice…. ….involves some risk taking –There is opportunity cost associated with a choice Goal is to: –Minimize risk –Reduce unknown
