Basic Management Functions Planning – involves setting goals and determining how to reach them Organizing – establishing a time frame in which to achieve the goal, assigning employees to the project, & determining a method for approaching the work Controlling – the process of setting standards and evaluating performance

Decision Making Process Define the problem Identify the options available Gather information and determine the consequences of each option Choose the best option Take action Evaluate the results

Planning Realistic, comprehensive, & flexible Plans for the short- & long-range uses of people, technology, and material resources Should be a written statement that identifies resources that can be used to meet a given goal Should be clear & direct Everyone involved should discuss the plan

Organizing Coordinated effort to reach a company’s planning goals Assigning responsibility, establishing work relationships, hiring staff to carry out the work, and directing the work of employees Staffing involves recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating workers

Controlling The process of comparing a plan with actual performance Involves: Setting standards Evaluating performance according to those standards Solving problems in the evaluation Purpose is to influence the behavior of employees so they are effective in helping achieve goals

Management Techniques Give clear directions Be consistent Treat employees fairly Be firm when necessary Set a good example Delegate responsibility Foster teamwork Be ethical

Why is it important for supervisors to be consistent? What might happen if a supervisor refuses to delegate responsibility to those under him, but rather takes on n extremely heavy work load?

Management Styles Authoritarian Makes all the decisions Communication from top down Democratic Employees take part in decision-making Communication flows both directions

Management Styles Variations of authoritarian & democratic Participatory Directions are given by management but employees may complete a task without close supervision Teamwork Management allows employees to decide how best to complete a project

Management Styles Other Variations Discussion Management Managers meet frequently with employees about how tasks should be accomplished Delegating Style Managers assign tasks to employees who they believe can complete them Different workplaces & situations call for different management styles

Employee Motivation The more people feel they are appreciated, the harder they work Managers should provide frequent feedback & formally evaluate them each year Identifying long-term goals and rewarding those who meet them are important ways to motivate those you manage

Rewards Reward smart work, not busy work To get results, reward results Identify those that value speed and quality Ask them to suggest ways to improve performance Enthusiastic long-term employees are the key to success in most companies Reward loyalty by investing in continuing education & promoting from within Praise for good ideas & successes

Encourage Creativity Do not let conformity stifle creativity Encourage creativity & remind them they will not be penalized for mistakes Sometimes it is necessary to take risks when being creative

Activity/Project You will be put into groups Once you get into your groups, you will get onto a computer/computers Search for different team building activities, learn about your activity, practice your activity, and then you will demonstrate your activity It should have movement and physical activity Afterwards, we will have a discussion I will then select 2 activities & you will vote on which one you liked better
