The Second Summer of the Sisterhood By: Mallory Brock Author: Anne Brashares Publisher: Delacorte Press Published in 2003

Introduction This book is the sequel to the first book, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. In this book, four girls are entering their second summer with the traveling pants. The pants are a pair of jeans that coincidentally fit all four girls, even though their bodies are shaped completely different. Throughout the summer, the girls share the jeans by mailing them to each other with a letter. All four girls, Lena, Bee, Carmen, and Tibby go through tragedies and some of the best experiences of their lives.

Introduction (Continued) Throughout the second summer, some of the girls are traveling and some stay home. All the girls live in Washington, D.C. though. Bee travels to Burgess, Alabama to see her grandmother, and Tibby goes to Williamston to take classes over the summer. Carmen and Lena stay at home for most of the summer, but Lena eventually has to leave home for a family tragedy.

Characters Bee- She is addicted to soccer, loves life, and is full of energy. Then, Bee’s mother dies and she goes into a depression. Lena- She is a quiet and hates to be the center of attention. Lena also has a Greek heritage and visits Greece in this book. Carmen- She is an only child that has divorced parents. She is loud and enjoys a lot of attention. Tibby- She is very opinionated about things and is misunderstood. Her hobbies are making movies and goes to a university to study film. From left to right: Lena, Carmen, Tibby, and Bee (Bridget)

Characters (Antagonist) One of the antagonists in this book is most definitely life. In the second summer, life throws just as many curveballs at them as it does in the first summer. Kostos- He is Lena’s boyfriend she met in Greece, but their relationship is on again of again. Tibby’s mother is definitely a protagonist. She does not understand Tibby and is always against her. Greta is Bee’s estranged grandmother that Bee visits over the summer. Kostos

Character (Continued) David is an antagonist to Carmen because she sees him as the person that is ruining her and her mothers relationship. Tibby’s mother David Greta

Conflicts All of the girls have conflicts, but they each have their own individual issues. Lena is dealing with an indecisive lover and a family tragedy. Bridget is in a depression, so she travels to Alabama to rekindle her love for life and to patch things up with her grandmother.

Conflicts (Continued) Carmen is dealing with her mother dating and her mom’s attention not always being on her. Tibby is still recovering from her best friend Bailey’s death, and she is sorting through her emotions for her best friend Brian.

Minor Characters Effie- Lena’s younger and energetic little sister.

Minor Characters Brian- He is Tibby’s best friend who tries to convince her to do what is right.

Minor Characters Bailey Graffman- She is no longer living, but she is a little girl that inspires Tibby everyday, and Tibby bases her video project on Bailey.

Thoughts on the book The Second Summer of the Sisterhood, was a wonderful and thrilling book to read. I honestly was not able to put down the book. Usually, sequels are not as good as the first book, but this book was definitely an exception.
