3 rd Quarter Journals Answer all journals in a ½ page in complete sentences, reaching the middle hole of your notebook.

Journal 1 “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” Henry David Thoreau What do you think Thoreau means by the phrase “to live deliberately”? Do you think that you live deliberately? Why or why not?

Journal 2 Transcendentalists believed that no institution should be as powerful as the individual. How much power do political, religious, and corporate institutions wield in our society? Support your position with examples. Can one person make a difference in our society? If so, how? Should individuals have more power than they do? Why or why not?

Emerson Quote Project With a partner or on your own, choose 1-3 quotes from Emerson’s Nature (p.390) and Self-Reliance (p. 393)and create a collage that represents the quotes using magazine clippings (at least 4 images). Ex: “To be great is to be misunderstood.” –Pictures of women who are “misunderstood” –Only showing women cleaning, working in the garden cooking….other side women in suits You must accompany your collage with a 1-2 paragraph explanation of why you chose the images you did and and how they represent the quote(s) you chose.
