1
Physics Vector Battleship Activity (Also known as the ClassCraft Activity: “Conquest of the Seven Seas”)
2
Equipment needed Metric ruler Protractor Pencil/pen
3
Overview As a kid, you might remember the game: Battleship ™ This will be a take on that game Each team will be given two documents One document will contain the placement of their ships With the first, the team will determine the vector coordinates of a hit The other document will be blank With the second, the team will decide where to “shoot” and get those vector coordinates
4
Overview, continued You will mark on your document where the “shots” will land You will write down all of the coordinates of your shots and hand it to the other team; they will do the same to you Each side will compare the coordinates of the other teams “shots” where the actual locations of each of their ships You will write “HIT” next to each successful shot and “MISS” next to each unsuccessful shot You will also write “SUNK _________” with the blank having the type of ship sunk; repeat for each ship Hand papers back For any disagreements, compare the “shots” document of one team to the other team’s “ships” document
5
Turn-in Each team will turn in their “ships” document, their “shots” document, and their paperwork showing both the vector coordinates of their ships and their shots Make sure that all team members names are on each of your group’s pages.
6
Blank grid Each printed grid is approximately 1cm x 1 cm This is the point to take all measurements from
7
On your blank sheet, select 20 locations to “shoot at” Pick the center of that grid square Take a distance and direction heading from the origin Write the coordinate down in polar notation (distance, angle) You will be providing this list of “targets” to the opposing team They will give you their list Compare the list to your actual ship locations to determine hits/misses Remember, it is measuring not calculating! Write the word “HIT” next to each successful coordinate and “MISS” next to each unsuccessful coordinate If a ship is sunk from a final hit, write “SUNK _______” with the type of ship Once done, each team will compare the grids with the shots to the grids with the ships to ensure accuracy of the number of hit/misses “It’s hit or miss from here on out”
8
Shot list Measure this angle Measure this distance This shot coordinates (14 cm, 71° )
9
Team roles I am trying to make teams of 4 Two team members would have the job of determining their teams “shots” with the coordinates Two other team members will make the “answer key” of the coordinates for their ships Teams of less than three will have to divide up the work differently
10
Grades/points Grades for this assignment is pretty straight forward There are 20 coordinates for shots (1 point each) There are 17 coordinates for ships (1 point each) There will be 3 points for writing the “HIT”s and “MISS”s Total 40 points; percentage is based on this ClassCraft points 5XP for each successful “HIT” 50 XP for each successful “SINK” 500 XP for the team with the most combined “HITS” and “SINKS”
