crucible: Two major definitions: A) A ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures B) A place or occasion of severe test or trial. Make a prediction about how you think the title The Crucible may play a role in the upcoming story. Then, tell your partner your thoughts.

In 1692 nineteen men and women and two dogs were convicted and hanged for witchcraft in a small village in eastern Massachusetts. By the standards of our own time, if not of that, it was a minor event, a spasm of judicial violence that was concluded within a matter of months. The bodies were buried in shallow graves or not at all, as a further indication that the convicted had not only forfeited participation in the community of man in this life, but in the community of saints in the next. Just how shallow those graves were, however, is evident from the fact that the people buried there were not eradicated from history: their names remain with us to this day, not least because of Arthur Miller, for whom past events and present realities have always been pressed together by a moral logic. In his hands the ghosts of those who died have proved real enough even if the witches they were presumed to be were little more than fantasies conjured by a mixture of fear, ambition, frustration, jealousy, and perverted pride. Yikes– I can’t believe so many people actually died! Hmm- why minor? People’s lives were lost. Perhaps in the grand scheme of what happens in our world today, it’s minor. But we still hear about it? No Heaven for them? I think this is saying that their stories weren’t buried deep enough because we still hear about them today? Whoa- had to re-read. Past and present are connected by morality?

In 1957 the Massachusetts General Court passed a resolution stating that “No disgrace or cause for distress” attached itself to the descendants of those indicted, tried, and sentenced. Declaring the proceedings to be “the result of popular hysterical fear of the Devil,” the resolution noted that “more civilized laws” had superseded those under which the accused had been tried. It did not, however, include by name all those who had suffered, and it was not until 1992 that the omissions were rectified in a further resolution of the court. It had taken exactly three hundred years for the state to acknowledge its responsibility for all those who died. Whoa- definitely re-read. What does this mean? Descendants are family, so this is saying the family shouldn’t be distressed? This is 300 years later? So today we have more civilized laws? So that means that anything that happened 300 years ago wasn’t legit? I think? Two interesting points here– 1) Why does the state care so much 300 years later? 2) It was the state’s fault?

Now… YOU try! Try to closely read the paragraphs that are on the back of your sheet. What is the meaning of the text? Try to figure out what confusing phrases mean and what you should be able to understand after reading. TAKE YOUR TIME– really try to work through what each sentence means and why it’s included.

A couple things to note about the play (can be called a “drama”): Written largely through dialogue (not through a narrator or one character’s perspective, for example) Uses acts and scenes (instead of chapters) Uses stage directions that will be italicized
13
The Crucible: P. 3 Need: Stage Director (read the italics) Reverend Parris (many lines) Abigail Williams (many lines) Tituba (almost no lines) Susanna Walcott (few lines)

Homework: Read to the end of p. 13 and complete three think- alouds about character If you’re interested in the audio (listening as you read), that’s a fantastic idea if you think it will help you understand what’s going on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7BZ_WLjX34 Starts at 2:10 if you want to start on p. 8 Final drafts due before 4 PM today.
