Ice Object Catalogue, Draft 2.0 and Presentation
Ice in ECDIS Workshop, St.John’s June 5th and 6th, 2000 Ice Object Catalogue, Draft 2.0 and Presentation LtzS Kay Pahmeyer / Captain Wolf Scheuermann Presentation by Friedhelm Moggert
6
History of ice in ECDIS :
February first workshop June second workshop SevenCs presents first draft object catalogue by IDON East Corporation (Doug O’ Brian) May third meeting proposal is agreed upon 1996/97 Draft 2.0 (Scheuermann / Pahmeyer)
7
The two ways of representing ice in charts:
A: hatching of sea ice area used by European (Baltic Ice Services) Fast ice Bergy waters Consolidated, compacted or very close ice Level Ice
8
The two ways of representing ice in charts:
B: the egg code mainly used by Canadian and American Ice Services
9
Examination of both types:
Type A - hatching of sea ice areas total concentration is represented by different hatching patterns additional information is displayed with extra symbols area objects and their presentation can easily be realized with the existing standards
10
Only Type A proved to be useful for ECDIS presentations
Type B - Egg Code : very complex, more details can be displayed egg symbol is cartographic object (must not be used in S-57) problem to display different attributes within the egg fields egg does not always fit into corresponding area huge amount of attribute combinations (results into huge amount of different egg objects) use of partial concentrations within one area (not compatible with S-57) Only Type A proved to be useful for ECDIS presentations
11
Ice Object Catalogue, Draft 2.0 and Presentation
based on WMO Sea Ice Nomenclature compliance with standard S-57 objects compliance with standard S-52 catalogue consists of ice object classes and ice attributes basically ice coverage types, icebergs, ice drift, ice dynamics are displayed other information can be withdrawn from pick report (is not lost !!!)

The Presentation in ECDIS
display is similar to traditional ice charts information can be displayed together with nautical chart data presentation as overlay or integration of ice objects in base cell the display is generated in ECDIS application appearance depends on attribute combinations (special lookup tables) not all attribute values result into symbolization attributes that are not symbolized can be withdrawn via pick report conditional symbology procedure for ice thickness ECDIS typical display features (night display, SCAMIN, conditional symbology)

Example for presentation in ECDIS

24
Updating of Ice Charts Ice services have to create updates and new editions of ice charts updates have to be created more frequently than for navigational charts S-57 update mechanism can be used update information must be provided on server computer data distribution via satellite, cell phones, radio link client applies updates (difference information) to last edition alternatively distribution of new editions instead of update mechanism
25
Open tasks and questions
Ice services should evaluate this concept does the concept meet all requirements of ice services in practice are end users interested in ‘Ice in ECDIS’ are pilot projects useful to test the suggested concept can the ice objects be incorporated into the S-57 object catalogue does the concept meet ECDIS performance standards (overlay)
