3. Gohan in Japanese is the word for meal. Gohan means steamed rice and is such an important food to the Japanese people. Today people from around Japan eat many dishes from around the world. Cities around Japan have lots of fast-food restaurants that offer hamburgers and fried chicken, which are popular with young people. Japanese people say "itadakimasu, “before they eat, meaning "I receive this food."

4. Sushi is vinegar rice usually topped with other ingredients, such as fish. The traditional form of sushi is fermented fish and rice wrapped in seaweed. The common ingredient across all the different kinds of sushi is sushi rice. The variety in sushi comes from the different fillings and toppings, condiments, and the way these ingredients are put together.

5. Sukiyaki is a Japanese dish. It consists of meat (usually thinly sliced beef), or a vegetarian version made only with firm tofu. Generally sukiyaki is a single dish for the colder days of the year and it is commonly found at Japanese year-end parties. Sukiyaki has become very popular outside Japan and many people consider it an elegant dish world-wide. Many restaurants around the world carry sukiyaki, with their own variations.

6. Tempura is a popular Japanese dish of deep fried battered meats, seafood, or vegetables. In Japan, restaurants specializing in tempura are called tenpura-ya and range from inexpensive fast food chains to very expensive five-star restaurants. Cooked bits of tempura are either eaten with dipping sauce or used to assemble other dishes. Tempura is commonly served with grated daikon and eaten hot immediately after frying.
