Appetizers Salads Entrees Side Dishes Desserts Appetizers are finger foods usually served prior to a meal, or in between mealtimes, and are also called hors d’oeuvres, antipasti, or starters. They may range from the very simple to the very complex, depending on the occasion and the time devoted to making them. Common examples includes: shrimp cocktail, calamari, salad, potato skins, mussels, bruschetta or cheese and crackers. A dish consisting of small pieces of food, which may be mixed with a sauce or salad dressing. Salads can incorporate a variety of foods including vegetables, fruits, cheese, cooked meat, eggs and grains. Garden salads use a base of leafy greens; they are common enough that the word salad alone often refers specifically to garden salads. Other types include bean salad, tuna salad, fattoush, Greek salad, and somen salad. A dish served before the main course, or between two principal courses of a meal. In North American English, the term retains an older meaning describing a heavy, meat course. After the entrée comes the soup, one or more roasts, and then a final course. Common examples include: steak, chicken, fish, spaghetti. A side dish, sometimes referred to as a side order, side item, or simply a side, is a food item that accompanies the entrée or main course at a meal. Side dishes such as salad, potatoes and bread are commonly used with main courses throughout many countries of the western world. A course that concludes a main meal. The course usually consists of sweet foods and beverages, but may include coffee, cheeses, nuts, or other savory items. In some parts of the world there is no tradition of dessert to conclude a meal. Examples: fruit, cakes, tarts, cookies, biscuits, gelatins, pastries, ice creams, pies, puddings, custards, and sweet soups. Довідка p. 64 “A Restaurant Menu”
