Chapter 1: Variables in Algebra
VOCABULARY
2
Variable A letter that represents a range of numbers Example: x
3
Expression A mathematical phrase that includes operations, numbers, and/or variables. It does not contain an equal sign Example 2p + 7
4
Evaluate Substitute and Solve Example: x= 2, 5x 5(2), 10
5
Power Is an expression of the form ab Example: 24
6
Exponent The power to which a number or expression is raised
Example: 24 Exponent
7
Order of Operations The rules for evaluating an expression involving more than one operation PEMDAS
8
Equation A mathematical statement or sentence that says one mathematical expression or quantity is equal to the other Example: 3x + 7 = 21
9
Solution A number that when substituted for the variable in an equation or inequality results in a true statement The answer
10
Inequality A mathematical sentence that contains one of the following symbols: ≤, ≥, <, > Example: 3x > 21
11
Function A rule that establishes a relationship between 2 quantities the input and output There is exactly one input for each output
12
Input A value in the Domain of a function (x)
Example: (2,4), (5, 7), (1,3) Domain: 2, 5, 1
13
Output A value in the Range of a function (y)
Example: (2,4), (5, 7), (1,3) Range: 4,7,3
14
Relation A set of pairs of values. The 1st value in each pair is the input and the 2nd value is called the output Example: (2,4), (5, 7), (1,3)
15
Domain The set of all possible values of the independent variable in a function It is the x in the ordered pair Example: (2,4), (5, 7), (1,3) Domain: 2, 5, 1
16
Range The set of all dependent values It is the y in the ordered pair
Example: (2,4), (5, 7), (1,3) Range: 4,7,3
