3.  Your college essay, regardless of topic choice, should demonstrate your character and your background.  It helps to set a context in which your application will be reviewed.  College essays are not usually used to test your vast vocabulary or your knowledge of literary works. Readers of your essay should not need an encyclopedia or dictionary to decipher what you are trying to say.

4.  Reveal something about yourself. If you’re telling about a pivotal moment in your life, be sure to spend more time on how that moment has changed you – how has your impact on your environment changed, rather than explaining the defining moment.  10% - pivotal moment  90%- impact you have had because of that moment

5. See your counselor before submitting your essay.

6.  FERPA: waive your right to see the recommendations  Common App: invite & assign recommenders (use google chrome)  Guidance needs a copy of your letters of rec  Please be sure your G.C. has a copy of your activity sheet – she needs to write a letter for you too

8.  What type of grades and GPA are the colleges generally looking for?  SAT scores shown are totaling only the Reading and the Math scores (not writing)  EOP
