Organic Molecules
2
Macromolecules Macromolecules are “giant molecules” found in living cells Smaller units are called monomers, these join together to form polymers
3
Organic Compounds 4 groups of organic compounds found in living things are: –Carbohydrates, –Lipids, –Nucleic –Acids and Proteins These organic compounds are sometimes referred to as Biomolecules or Carbon Compounds
4
Carbohydrates Living things mainly use carbohydrates as a source of energy. But, they have many other uses as well.
5
Lipids Lipids are used to store energy Lipids are also important parts of biological membranes and waterproof coverings
6
Nucleic Acid Nucleic Acids are molecules containing Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, and Phosphorous. Nucleic Acids store and transmit hereditary information There are two kinds of Nucleic Acids (RNA and DNA)
7
Proteins Proteins are macromolecules containing Nitrogen as well as Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen Proteins are polymers of molecules called amino acids.
