2.  ALL living things share SIX important characteristics 1. Have a cellular organization 2. Contain similar chemicals 3. Use energy 4. Respond to their surroundings 5. Grow and develop 6. Reproduce

3.  Cell- basic unit of structure and function of all living things  Unicellular- single celled organisms  Multicellular- organisms made up of many cells that are specialized.

4.  Composed of Water  Carbohydrates for energy  Proteins and lipids are a cells building blocks  Nucleic acids are the genetic material in the nucleus Cells use energy to grow wand repair injured parts.

5.  Stimulus-a change in an organisms surroundings that cause the organism to react  Response-an action or change in behavior  Development-the process of change that occurs during an organisms life to produce more complex organism.

6.  Living things come from other living things through reproduction  Spontaneous generation- a belief people once had that living things arose from non living sources.

8.  Autotrophs- organisms that make their own food  Heterotrophs- cannot make their own food. All organisms need food water and libving space. Because space on earth is limited, some organisms compete for food.

9.  Because conditions in their surroundings can change, organisms must be able to keep the conditions inside their body's constant HOMEOSTASIS the maintenance of stable internal conditions despite changes in surroundings.
