2 What are character traits?
Definition – words used to describe how a character acts or behaves, such as bravery or loyalty. Emotions vs. character traits Emotions change from moment to moment, whereas character traits are developed over time. Do not use emotions to describe character traits! Character Trait Handout Left column = overused; Use the OTHERS listed! Connotation (feeling of the word) Which are positive (+), negative(-), or neutral(0)? Example: smart = (0) nerd (-) genius (+)

9 Types of Characters: Protagonist – main character(s); most of the time is the “good guy” in most fictional texts Example: Percy Jackson Why is he the protagonist? Antagonist – character(s) that cause problems/conflicts for the protagonist; most of the time is the “bad guy/villain” in most fictional texts Example: Nancy Bobofit (at the beginning) How has she caused problems/conflict for Percy?

10 Types of Characters: Major – the characters that play a “major” role in changing the plot; they effect the plot a lot Example: Percy Jackson How is he major? Minor – the characters that play a “minor” role in changing the plot; they effect the plot very little Example: Hermes How is he minor?

Types of Characters: Not physical qualities! Static characters – character traits stay the same, never change Static = Same Example: Chiron (even as Mr. Brunner?) How? Dynamic characters – character traits change over time Move the plot of the story; make things more interesting Example: Percy Jackson How? What about you? Are you static or dynamic? Why?
