What does Percent mean? Percent means “out of 100” So if we know a fraction, or a decimal, we can easily write the percent… 60% X 20

What is the percent of the shaded region? 70% X 10

What is the percent of the shaded region? 70% X 5

Try These! Find the percent for each shape given on your worksheet… You have 5 minutes!

50%25%37.5%

What percent is shaded? 50%

What percent is shaded? 75%

Estimating Percents When the individual sections are not marked, we can estimate the fraction and the percent

Estimate the percent of the shaded region

It is less than 50% but more than 25%. Looks like more than one third… I could draw lines in to get a fraction…

Estimate the percent of the shaded region It is more than 50% but less than 75%. Looks like a little more than one third is not shaded… so about 66% shaded? I could draw lines in to get a fraction…

What’s wrong with this picture? One whole is the same as 100% 55% 35% 20% All sectors should have a sum of 100%... 55% + 35% + 20% ≠ 100

What’s wrong with this picture? How would you label these pieces correctly?

What’s wrong with these pictures? Do all sectors total 100%
