Progress Report, Weeks 2 & 3 REU 2012 Paul Finkel May 30 th, 2012

Project Topic Working with Waqas Crowd counting for high density crowds – Disaster prevention

Papers (reading and/or rereading) Abnormal Crowd Behavior Detection using Social Force Model – Talks about social force, psychological effects involved – Social force uses optical flow – Hard to track in dense crowds (occlusion, resolution) – Use particle advection! Eliminate time gaps b/c it is continuous Does not track in this top down approach No segmentation needed

Papers (reading and/or rereading)(cont’d) Social force model for pedestrian dynamics – Learned a lot about social force Concepts: desired destination, velocity, and direction; distance between pedestrians; repulsion (discomfort near walls, other weird things); attraction in time (friends, window displays); things you can see > things you can’t see; territorial effect (private sphere) – Still learning the equations

Papers (reading and/or rereading)(cont’d) Traffic and related self-driven many-particle systems (75 pages, still reading) A Streakline Representation of Flow in Crowded Scenes (skimmed over, couldn’t decipher figures, will discuss with Waqas) Crowd Flow Segmentation & Stability Analysis (skimmed over, couldn’t decipher figures, will discuss with Waqas)

Papers (plan on reading)(particle advection) A Lagrangian Particle Dynamics Approach for Crowd Flow Segmentation and Stability Analysis (Ali, Shah) Floor Fields for Tracking in High Density Crowd Scenes (Ali, Shah) Visual Crowd Surveillance Through A Hydrodynamics Lens (Moore, Ali, Mehran, Shah)

Dataset Found a few videos Not perfect – Too much camera movement (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXtOdSgf6Ic& feature=related) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXtOdSgf6Ic& feature=related – Too fast (e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2UyDucuFA Q&feature=related) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2UyDucuFA Q&feature=related

Plans for next week Read papers about particle advection Start to implement particle advection Find usable videos for dataset
