Properties of Matter Unit Week 30 Directions 1.Prepare your desk for science. Science notebook 2.Use voice level 2 (conversation) discuss the following question: What are the three physical properties we talked about last week? What are some 4 th grade words you can use to describe each one? If you have a signed rubric, bring it to me!
2
New Seats!
3
Pass out comic strips & rubrics

Targets & Warm Up Targets: Students will define and describe matter’s physical properties Warm Up: What are the three physical properties we talked about last week? What are some 4 th grade words you can use to describe each one?
5
Physical Properties What is a physical property? A physical property is any property of matter that can be measured or observed. Physical properties can be tested when matter changes but does not turn into different matter.
6
We will focus on…. Color Shape Texture Length & Width Mass Volume (of liquids and solids) observe measure
7
Units List Length/Width/Height mm = millimeter cm = centimeter m = meter Mass g = grams kg = kilograms Volume (liquids and odd - shaped solids) mL = milliliter L = liter Volume (solids only) mm 3 = cubic millimeter cm 3 = cubic centimeter m 3 = cubic meter
8
Length & Width Length: How long an object is – Usually the vertical and/or longer side Width: How wide an object is – Usually the horizontal and/or shorter side Measured with a ruler Units: mm, cm
9
Mass The amount of matter in an object For liquids, subtract the mass of the container after finding the total mass Measured with a pan balance Units: g, kg
10
Volume (of liquids) The amount of space that matter takes up Measured with a graduated cylinder Units: mL, L
11
Volume (of rectangular-shaped solids) The amount of space that matter takes up Volume = length x width x height Measured with a ruler or meter stick Units = mm 3, cm 3, m 3
12
Volume (of odd-shaped solids) The amount of space that matter takes up Observe the change in water level water displacement Measured with a graduated cylinder Units: – mL or L – mm 3, cm 3, or m 3 1 mL = 1 cm 3
13
Practice Think & Measure/Discuss: 1. Can I measure the length & width of my object? How would I measure the length and width? 2.How would I measure the mass? 3.How would I measure the volume? Items: Eraser Toothbrush Toy duck Glue stick Cup of water Slinky

15
Reflection Questions What tests can we do to find physical properties of matter? Why are there a variety of ways to test and find physical properties of matter? (ex. finding the volume is different for a key compared to a book)
16
Targets (Revisited) Students will define and describe matter’s physical properties
